Last week we covered the high level concepts of weather models and forecasting. But where do we find the best information? Here we’ve compiled a few of our favorites based on the forecast range. Examples will be provided for Newport, RI

Long Range (10+ Days)

There is an inverse relationship between the range of a forecast and its resolution and accuracy. Long range forecasts are provided based on climatic predictions and historical data. Long range forecasts are good for spotting trends but you can be sure that any weather predicted beyond about 5 days is likely to happen, just not on the day that was predicted.

NWS Long Range Predictions can provide you with an overall view of the trends in the coming weeks to begin planning your projects.

Accuweather Daily Forecast provides an easy to navigate long range forecast, with very basic information.

Medium Range (4-7 Days)

Medium range forecasts are where you’ll spend most of your time. By this point the weather models have generally settled and the meteorologists can weigh their confidence in aspects of each one.

eweather - An absolute gem of a New England resource. A meteorologist in Hartford provides detailed daily analysis of the local weather systems.

NWS Marine Forecast The tried and true marine forecast - text only and gets you the basics you need before heading out.

NWS 7-Day The standard for most forecasts. This gives a high level but also offers a secret. In uncertain weather scenarios, the meteorologists don’t always agree on their analysis of the models. Looking down the page brings you to the Forecast Discussion. This is where you will find alternate forecasts, letting you know what else might materialize.

Predictwind - Worth every penny for the serious mariner. Daily briefings, full forecast tables showing each model, weather routing, passage planning, observations and more. Looking for the smoothest right to Block Island? Plug in the route and run multiple simulations with staggered start times right from your couch.

Sailflow/Windalert Free or paid versions give access to fewer features than Predictwind but at a much lower price point. Full access to forecast tables, wind maps, observations and more. Many of the weather stations limited to “Pro” or “Gold” membership are public stations with data that can be found elsewhere for free.

Short Range and Observations

In addition to the observations available from Predictwind and Sailflow, these are a couple of extra useful tools.

National Data Buoy Center Realtime and historical data from an array of government maintained buoys. Check wave heights, live wind, and more. This is a good location to find the weather stations that are paywalled with Sailflow.

RadarScope The radar app used by professional meteorologists. Get live feeds from NOAA weather radars, set parameters and see what’s happening in real time. This is not only a great resource for checking precipitation, but a great way to find your way quickly out of a fog bank.
