There are three feet of snow on the ground. How is your boat?March 15, 2026
Access to outdoor boats is tough. With this much snow and the freeze/thaw cycles it's going to be important to try to visit in the next couple of weeks. The snow really holds the ladder in place nicely once it settles so don't be too nervous. Shrinkwrapped boats: Check on your boat and make sure the framing is still intact. These frames are not built to withstand this sort of snow and could bend stanchions or worse. Go to the boat, get inside the shrinkwrap and push upwards to clear all you can. Uncovered boats: Clear your cockpit and scuppers. Your biggest risk is an ice dam in the cockpit leading the water to drain into the cabin. Shovel out your cockpit and make sure your scuppers are clear so that snow melt has a place to go. This sort of snow significantly compresses the Spring preparation season, so if you don't have your launch plans in place, it will soon be too late. If you want someone else to handle it, call Martingale. Daniel Martinez Founder / CEO @ Martingale daniel@martingalemarine.com | 703-568-2645
Martingale Newsletter #18 - What does success look like?March 10, 2026
Success means zero surprises and predictable outcomes. As the snow melts and the days get longer, this is the most critical time in your boat's season. At Martingale, our entire model is built around one promise: your boat launches on time with zero surprises. Predictable outcomes aren't aspirations; they result from planning months ahead, locking in contractors before the rush and treating every detail with the same seriousness, whether it's a major repair or something generally overlooked. This winter proved the model. Two refits moved through cleanly. One is already staged for spring, the other will roll straight from the indoor work to the ramp. All our other vessels are sitting ready with only commissioning tasks outstanding. That's not luck. That's process. Because the heavy lifting is done early, May becomes what it should be: fine tuning, polishing and confirming that every system is ready for a flawless season. We treat every vessel like the long-term investment that it is. That means protecting not just the boat, but the plans you've built around it. If you're not yet a Martingale member, now is exactly the right time to reach out. Spring is close, the window is narrowing, and our calendar fills early. Winter of Silence - From the Boat YardFebruary 2, 2026
It's that time of year. You've dug out from the first big snow and started daydreaming about summer on the water. You call the boat yard to check on things, see how your projects are shaping up, and… nothing. You wait a few days and try again. Still nothing. Another week goes by. Maybe you send an email. Pretty soon you start wondering if they are dodging calls, dealing with turnover, or simply buried. We have been in this world for more than 25 years. We have seen it, lived it, and we know exactly why it happens and how to avoid it. If you want proactive, responsive service and real confidence in your launch date, now is the time to get ahead of it. Reply to this email and let's set up a time to talk about making 2026 your easiest boating season yet. Daniel Martinez Founder / CEO @ Martingale daniel@martingalemarine.com | 703-568-2645
Boats are for familiesJanuary 3, 2026
Over the holidays we think about family. Something we find so wonderful about our members is the way they prioritize. Sure, the boat has to work for the primary, but that's rarely the top priority. We have a punch list that says "handicapped access" for one member to keep his mother on the water as long as possible. We have another where the design brief is essentially "go fast offshore with my kids and keep them safe." We see people setting up their boats for others and it's inspiring. Martingale isn't just thinking about your boat. We're thinking about your spouse who wants to entertain aboard, your kid who likes to fish and the other kid who likes the beach. We're thinking not just about how the boat works but how the boat works for your family. Welcome to the big picture service experience. Thank you all for being part of the Martingale family. Our aligned pricing model has been a huge success, taking our transparency and accountability to the next level. Starting in 2026, our members will have direct access to our proprietary service management platform for real-time visibility and service requests. Interested in taking back your time and spending more of it on the water? Reach out today to lock in 2025 pricing before it's gone! Winter Projects - Without the HeadacheOctober 16, 2025
A Different Kind of Off-Season Winter work doesn't have to mean chasing contractors, juggling schedules, or checking in on half-finished jobs. The real value is in being able to hand off your boat with confidence—and know that when you come back, the work is done, the details are handled, and the season ahead is already set. From Start to Finish Think of us less like a yard and more like your project manager on the waterfront. You don't have to manage the moving parts. You just get the results. Minimal Interruption, Maximum Readiness Drop the boat off, pick it up later. In between, we take care of the work that matters most—quietly, thoroughly, and with your goals in mind. Let's Plan Your Winter If you'd like that kind of simplicity this season, reach out. We'll manage the projects, so you can enjoy the results. Daniel Martinez Founder / CEO @ Martingale daniel@martingalemarine.com | 703-568-2645

Newport Boat Show Week!September 17, 2025
It's Boat Show Week We're heading to the Newport International Boat Show, one of the most respected and well-attended yachting events in the world. If you've never been, it's worth the trip. If you're already planning to be there, we hope you'll stop by and say hello. You'll find us at the end of Commercial Wharf next to the Bohlin Tent. Martingale will be on-site all weekend, connecting with current members, meeting new ones, and sharing what we've been building. We're rolling out two major updates: First, we're offering 20% off onboarding costs for anyone who joins us at the show. It's a simple way to make it easier to get started—and a thank-you for showing up in person. Second, we're introducing our new savings-sharing model. Members will now see wholesale costs, pay a flat service fee, and split any excess discounts we negotiate. It's transparent, aligned, and built to reward partnership. We're excited to be part of this event, and even more excited to meet the people who make this industry great. Daniel Martinez Founder / CEO @ Martingale daniel@martingalemarine.com | 703-568-2645
Revolutionary New Pricing Structure!September 4, 2025
Service Pricing that Works for you, not against you. We've used our relationships and buying power to secure wholesale pricing for our members - quietly working behind the scenes. Now, we're pulling back the curtain. Some marinas add as much as 25% to every invoice just for the privilege of stepping on their docks. We think that's wrong. We want to add value and show you where your money is going. Here's how it's been: we've charged retail, paid wholesale, and kept the difference to run the business. No mystery there. But those wholesale prices are often 5%-30% lower than retail, depending on the work. Here's how it will be: - You get our wholesale price - We add a 10% service fee - Any discount above 10%? We split it with you. The bigger the discount we negotiate, the more we both win. That means we're fully aligned - and fully motivated - to get you the best possible deal, every time. What onboarding includes: - Intake and documentation of your vessel - Setup of your service calendar and vendor network - Full access to our transparent billing and shared-savings model Ready to simplify your boating life? Reply to this email and we'll take it from there. Want to talk in person? Find us at the Newport Boat Show at the end of Commercial Wharf, September 11-14. Martingale Newsletter #10 - Launch Season in Full Swing—Here When You Need UsJuly 1, 2025
Precision. Performance. Peace of Mind. As the season settles in, we're proud to share that every vessel under Martingale's care launched on time, completed sea trials seamlessly, and entered service precisely on schedule and on budget. Behind those smooth deliveries are the kinds of challenges that test any team—and moments we're proud of: An autohelm issue that looked like a $2,500 overhaul turned into a $600 correction, thanks to meticulous diagnostics by our technician. A disintegrated Hood mast swivel—obsolete for over 30 years—replaced with a perfect match sourced through our network in less than 8 hours. A full hydraulic failure at sea resolved by guiding the boat safely to an ideal port and securing a rare Navtec fitting straight from the source. Seven hours later, she was underway again. A factory-fresh yacht arrived with plumbing reversed between the black and grey water tanks. Tied up Tuesday. Re-plumbed Wednesday. Gone Thursday. At Martingale, we anticipate the unexpected and solve it before it becomes your problem. If you'd like that kind of confidence for the rest of your season, there's still time. Reach out and let's talk. Daniel Martinez Founder / CEO @ Martingale daniel@martingalemarine.com | 703-568-2645
Martingale Newsletter #9 - InvestmentsApril 8, 2025
Boats are investments. Sure, they may not top the Forbes list of savvy financial moves, but they're investments all the same. So, what makes an investment worthwhile? Returns. With boats, though, the returns are less about dollars and cents and more about life's intangible treasures. They're about unforgettable experiences, shared memories, family time, and the kind of laughter that echoes over the water with friends. But let's be honest—there's more to it than just good times. For a boat to truly be a worthwhile investment, it has to work. It needs to meet your expectations, achieve your goals, and, most importantly, do what you ask of it. An unreliable boat? That's the surest way to sink your investment. The best antidote? Regular, dependable maintenance. When your boat just works, it's freedom. It's confidence. It's knowing you can bring friends to the yacht club without that nagging "what if it doesn't start" pit in your stomach. When your boat just works, you use it more. You get more from your investment. That's what Martingale delivers: a boat that just works, so you can focus on what really matters—making memories, not managing maintenance. Martingale Newsletter #8 - Weather ResourcesMarch 31, 2025
Last week we covered the high level concepts of weather models and forecasting. But where do we find the best information? Here we've compiled a few of our favorites based on the forecast range. Long Range (10+ Days) There is an inverse relationship between the range of a forecast and its resolution and accuracy. Long range forecasts are provided based on climatic predictions and historical data. Long range forecasts are good for spotting trends but you can be sure that any weather predicted beyond about 5 days is likely to happen, just not on the day that was predicted. NWS Long Range Predictions can provide you with an overall view of the trends in the coming weeks to begin planning your projects. Accuweather Daily Forecast provides an easy to navigate long range forecast, with very basic information. Medium Range (4-7 Days) Medium range forecasts are where you'll spend most of your time. By this point the weather models have been running for several iterations and have stabilized around a solution. There is still a 10-25% chance of being significantly wrong but this is where we start to commit to project scheduling. Windy.com is our personal favorite and provides outstanding wind, temperature and weather overlays that are very easy to read and navigate. Weather.gov provides comprehensive NWS data direct from the National Weather Service with very little decoration - it's a good primary source. Short Range (0-3 Days) When we're less than 3 days from our weather window, we're looking at short range forecasts where most of the uncertainty has worked itself out and we can commit to projects with a high degree of confidence. Ventusky.com is excellent for short range predictions and has a beautiful interface. NOAA Weather Radio is always on in our vehicles and workshops - it's the most comprehensive forecast available and is updated hourly. For the racing sailors among you, PredictWind has excellent multi-model comparisons for your route - it's outstanding for predicting what the next 24-48 hours will look like. Martingale Newsletter #7 - False Spring #1 - Or is it? - Let's Talk WeatherMarch 25, 2025
False Spring #1 – Or Is It? – Let's Talk Weather Hello everyone, and welcome to spring in New England! As winter loosens its grip, those early hints of warmth can be both promising and deceiving. We all know that when it comes to scheduling sanding, bottom blasting, or composite repairs, you need more than just a sunny day—you need the right weather window. Weather Fundamentals: Models and Forecasts Modern weather forecasting is a smart blend of high-powered computer models and seasoned meteorologists. Weather Models: Think of these as weather calculators. They take in raw data—temperature, humidity, wind, pressure—and simulate how it will all interact over time. Models like ECMWF, GFS, ICON, and others provide the numerical probabilities that give us insight into weather trends. Forecasts: This is where human expertise steps in. Meteorologists interpret model outputs along with local observations and historical trends. The result? Forecasts that give you actionable advice on when to schedule your next project. False Spring: A Cautionary Tale False spring occurs when temperatures spike temporarily before settling back into winter-like conditions. It's common in our region, and it can trick even the most seasoned boaters and yard managers into scheduling work too early. The result? Half-finished projects, subpar results, and wasted money. Key Tip: Don't schedule critical painting or fiberglass work just because one forecast says it's warm. Look for a sustained window of 50°F+ temperatures with low humidity, minimal wind, and no rain in the forecast for at least 3 days. We'll be sending out a weather-focused update every time a significant system approaches this spring. Watch your inbox—because timing is everything. Martingale fixes that. We vet all of our partners before bringing them on board. We want to keep hearing from you. Martingale Newsletter #6 - Our Approach Part 2- It's a Matter of TimeMarch 3, 2025
How many calls does it take to get a call back? How many projects didn't get done last Fall because nobody called you back? And how much time will you spend this Spring wondering if your boat will actually be ready? At Martingale, we don't just save you money—we save you the most valuable thing of all: your time. Newsletter #5 - Our Approach Part 1 - How we Save you MoneyFebruary 24, 2025
Martingale isn't just an idea that spawned out of nowhere. It's the evolution of proven service management practices. The nature of marine service is that boats are non-standard. Owner's manuals are outdated the moment the boat leaves the factory. Each time a technician is dispatched to your boat, they're spending time just figuring out what they're working with. That's at least one wasted hour on every single job. Forever. We record all your standard belts, impellers, pump kits, fuses and spares. We chart all your interior systems, components, models and serial numbers. We document your deck hardware brands, dimensions, and specifications. Your rigging components, condition and locations are filed. We'll also go through your existing vessel records and digitize them. We then hunt down the relevant service manuals and parts breakouts. This is all compiled into a vessel record which exists as a living document and is consistently kept up to date by your service manager. So when a technician boards your boat, they know exactly what they're dealing with. They bring the right parts. They spend zero time diagnosing the obvious. And when they leave, we update the record. The result? Better service, less time, less money. That's the Martingale approach. Daniel Martinez Founder / CEO @ Martingale daniel@martingalemarine.com | 703-568-2645
